My love of jazz for 59 years (as of 2010)

I got hooked on jazz as a teenager when I purchased my first 33rpm LP, "Benny Goodman Live at Carnegie Hall 1938" soon after Columbia released it in 1950. In the 50s I began looking for deals on old jazz 78s. I ended up giving my collection to my fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, at Michigan State University when I left after my junior year to serve in the Army.

I was purchasing vinyl 33s, all I could afford at the time. I also started working on a jazz musician’s database that lists the bands and small groups that the various jazz musicians played in. My database project has been moving along very slowly for about ten years now because it is so time consuming. I still have about 200 LPs that I have been slowly recording as mp3 files on my computer.

In February 1998 I began broadcasting my monthy three hour "Jazztime with Don" radio show on Aspen Public Radio. The station is an NPR affiliate. My monthly show is normally on the last Thursday of the month with the next show on February 25th from 8 to 11 PM (Aspen time). The theme of my February show will be all about "Love and Jazz". I send out an e-mail about a week before each monthly show that reminds you to tune in and about what I will be playing. If you want to get these e-mails you can e-mail me at dvoltmer@yahoo.com and tell me to put you on my monthly jazz newsletter list. You can listen to our radio station live 24/7 on the internet at http://www.aspenpublicradio.org/ - just click "Listen Now" and/or "Play".

My show was being podcasted for over a year until December 2009 when the demand for the station's podcasts could not be handled by the host server. We had to remove all the station's jazz podcasts except for one. I'm working hard to get my show podcasted again but at this time I can't say when it will happen.

That's all I have time for now. Come back again.
